Claire Vale, Principal Research Associate in Evidence Synthesis

As part of the Meta-analysis Programme, Claire has designed and delivered systematic reviews and meta-analyses that have assessed the effects of treatments in a variety of settings. She has published international collaborative meta-analyses using aggregate and individual participant data from randomised trials in bladder, cervix, colorectal and lung cancers.

In recent years, she has also been involved in delivering prospective, collaborative meta-analyses of aggregate data of treatments for advanced prostate cancer, through the STOPCAP M1 programme, and of treatments for patients with COVID-19, working with the WHO Rapid Evidence Appraisal of COVID-19 Treatments (REACT) collaboration. Most recently, Claire has been involved in establishing the EVIE research group – to provide high quality evidence syntheses in the field of Women’s Health.

Claire is also interested in improving methods for evidence synthesis and has completed research to improve their design and conduct. Her current methodological interests include how to speed up the delivery of reliable aggregate data meta-analysis, and how to best use evidence synthesis to inform clinical trial design.  

She is a keen educator and in addition to her role as Departmental Graduate Tutor (Research) for the Institute of Clinical Trials and Methodology, she also regularly delivers teaches about the methods used in systematic reviews and meta-analysis. She has also led work to actively involve patients and the public as research partners in individual patient data meta-analysis.
